Happy Harvest Time!
A snapshot of our work in the library: Kindergarten- Book Selection is going very well. Students are deciding on ‘just right’ books and are listening to information books as well as fiction. Each class consists of a read aloud and a response and/or an activity on the Smart Board, and weekly book selection. Grade One- We completed our author study on Eric Carle. We have looked at World Book Kids, an online encyclopedia, to find facts on the insect and arachnids that go along with our book’s main characters. Ask your child what kind of art Eric uses to make his books (collage) Maybe you and your child could check out a book or two at your local library to deepen his/her knowledge of Eric’s wonderful works. Next up- we begin an author study on Audrey Wood. Grade Two- We are now learning about author Tomie dePaola and learning about genre (the different kinds of books). We are deepening our knowledge of setting, character, and the parts of a book. We also practiced taking note facts to find answers to questions, then created a Photo Story to share what we learned. Grade Three – We are learning how to find what we need in the library, using the online catalog and learning the organization of the library. We have cracked the code for B, FIC, E, and non-fiction books. We will continue to practice this skill and achieve 21st century library standard #1 “I can find what I need.” Grades Four – We have discussed the vocabulary for Internet and copyright, legal and illegal and websites and download. Rooster Game books are circulating well. Students are tracking what books he/she has read on a Rooster bookmark. Each book selection class, students reflect why books were chosen. We will be studying Chris Van Allsburg this year, a Rhode Island author. I am always available after school on Tuesdays. If you have questions, please contact me at [email protected] Happy Reading! I'm SO thankful to work with your children. Your Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Ward

Our fall fair is almost here! The Book Fair will be hosted in the library from Wed, Oct 1st through Friday, Oct. 3rd. Students are welcome to shop during their regular library classes as well as during Open House. Checks are payable to "Hope Valley PTO" Thank you in advance for supporting a love of books.
Hope Valley School students will begin checking out books this week. Children will be asking the question “How do I find a just right book for me?” It is my goal that children choose a book that instills a lifelong LOVE of books and reading. I guide students to find the “just right” books, and model choosing the books from the sections…Every student is unique and has special interests/abilities etc.
We ALL listened to Have you filled your bucket today? , written by Carol McCloud. The book focuses on filling up our invisible buckets each day by doing things to make others happy. Library learners work on filling each other’s buckets every day, and when we fill someone’s bucket, we fill our own too! Ask your child how they can fill someone's bucket :) Grades One and Two check out one book each week. Only one book may be checked out at a time, so please help your students remember to bring back his/her books each week on Library Day! Grade Three and Grade Four may check out two books/periodicals. Kindergarteners are learning about the author, Robert Munsch. We enjoyed the title Mortimer and 50 Degrees Below Zero will read Moira's Birthday this week. We are learning about taking care of books. Book Selection will be in a few weeks. Stay tuned! |
