Frida Kahlo (Magdelena Carmen Frida y Calderon). She is an artist from the 20th century who was born in 1907 on July 7th on the outskirts of Mexico and often “dressed like a boy”. At six she was diagnosed with polio in her right leg. Later in college at 18, she was involved in a bus accident which caused a handrail to fly through her lower stomach and back; she also broke her leg and collarbone. It also crushed her foot and dislocated her shoulder. During this time in her life when she became serious about painting. She put a mirror above her bed so she could paint herself though she studied to be a doctor. Later on Frida got married to Diego Rivera. She was 18 and her husband Diego who was a famous painter was 36 years old. After Diego and Frida got married, they later divorced in 1939 and then remarried again. Her mother described the marriage as “the marriage between a dove and and an elephant” so she did not attend the wedding. Frida’s art is considered surrealistic but Frida Kahlo did not like this title. She is considered this because she sneaks in little bits of her life which is called symbolism. She once said “I paint self portraits because I am so often alone”. She painted 55 self portraits and 143 regular paintings. Some of her paintings were called, Life in Full Bloom, Diego and I, and Self Portrait With Monkey. She had a dog named Xolot which she very close to, two spider monkeys Fulang Chang and Caimito de guayabal, a parrot Gertrudis Caca Blanco, Bonito the parrot, Grani the fawn, parakeets, makaws, hens and sparrows. Frida lived in a house called casa de azul (AKA the house of blue) until her death in 1954 at age 47.
