Surrealism is a type of art that began during the 20th century focusing on the unconscious mind. It was formed by Andre Masson. Surrealism was part of a movement in visual art and literature. It portrayed dream like images in a realistic way.
Some commonly known surrealists were Jean Arp, Max Errest, and Andre Masson. Even though this movement was mostly men, some women joined like Dorothea Tanning, Merrit Oppenheim, and Kay Sage. What's the difference between realism and surrealism? For an example in realism you draw an eraser and it looks like an eraser but, in surrealism you draw an eraser and it looks like a blue dog standing on top of an eraser on a cloud in the middle of space.
